The Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve is a 102,110 acre site designated by United Nations under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme. It includes a rare and diverse ecosystem featuring the Salmon River and its estuary, a sandy littoral spit, densely forested uplands, a two-mile basalt headland covered in native coastal prairie and a marine reserve stretching west into the waters of the Pacific. As a biosphere reserve it includes Core Protected Areas (Red), Managed Use Areas (Speckled Blue), and an Area of Cooperation (Green) which include the City of Lincoln City, Otis, and other areas in the watershed boundary.
